US issues security warning to its citizens in Lima due to wave of armed robberies

  • During the Peruvian summer, more people are on the streets, outdoor spaces, sidewalks, and parks. Be aware of thefts to avoid accidents caused by distracted drivers, bicyclists and pedestrians.
  • Recognize that thieves often hide among street performers, street vendors, and panhandlers at traffic lights and busy intersections. Use caution and avoid opening your windows at traffic lights or on busy streets while driving.
  • Be aware of your travel routes as navigation apps may lead you through unknown areas with high crime rates.
  • Don’t leave valuables unattended in your car. Be careful not to leave bags and/or briefcases on the floor or trunk. Close your doors and keep your windows up.
  • Discuss and practice personal safety measures with everyone in your household.
  • Beware of scams. Talk to your family or fellow travelers about how to handle unusual phone calls or unannounced visitors.
