Thousands of protesters took to the streets this Sunday (12.12.2021) in San Salvador, just days after the United States approved the cooperation of President Naib Boukel, against what they consider to be an authoritarian slide and against corruption in the country.
The demonstration, which was attended by various organizations, departed from Cascatlon Park in western San Salvador and closed in central Gerardo Barrios Square.
The United States imposed sanctions on Thursday on allegations of “corruption” against Carolina Resinos, Phuhl’s chief executive officer. The president called the allegations against Resinos “absurd” at a time when bilateral relations with North America were at an all-time low.
Following the dismissal of Supreme Court judges by the ruling party-dominated Congress in May and the dismissal of judges over the age of 60, judges and former judges also took part in the protest, chanting that they should respect the separation of powers.
The day passed without a hitch, despite protesters denouncing police and the army for setting up roadblocks to prevent protesters from entering the capital.
