A network of fraudsters continues to deceive Cubans intending to leave the country by selling fake airline tickets.
The desperate desire to leave the island becomes unsustainable and many fall into the hands of unscrupulous people who take advantage of the needs of others.
One recent case is that of a family that sold all their possessions in Cuba to buy tickets to Guyana. The scammers promised seats on an Air Aruba flight that would travel on the route between Havana and Georgetown. However, the deception will not stop there.
Theft victims paid $1,400.00 to an alleged private manager. She then sold more plane tickets to other people, making more and more false promises. For example, the trip will include transfers to Uruguay. In addition, secret passage through Brazil was guaranteed after landing in Guyana.
The method of work
The working method is repeated over and over again; More Cubans continue to “take the bait” as desperation to leave the island grows. It turns out that popular “travel agents” publicly advertise their exclusive services. One is to sell tickets and the other is to appoint fundraising managers in Cuba.
However, as expected, these clients were never seen and both brokers and clients were scammed. One of the couples, the victims of such a scam, had planned his trip to Uruguay with the supposed travel agency.
The value of the scam was $4,200.00. To get that amount of money, they had to sell their house. Now they have neither housing nor the long-awaited plane ticket.
To avoid falling for a scam like this, it is important to verify the authenticity of your plane tickets. This can be checked at airports, physical agencies or on the official website of the airline.
