The interest generated by mission followers led to the official Twitter of NASA’s Perseverance Mars Rover explaining the appearance of this mysterious object.
A total of 10 drills were taken to Mars for the mission: “Most of them are for collecting samples; others, like this, are for rock polishing (polishing the outer surface). All this is necessary to hide scientific clues inside the rocks,” they wrote in one of the tweets.
The drill bit, the little thing you see on the surface, was installed prior to launch to seal the drill and keep the interior protected. “To keep my science clean and clear, I put it aside before I start collecting samples with new, flawless parts,” Perseverance continues.
