Semana: What brought you to Colombia?

Cayetana Alvarez: I will be going to the country in the first week of November at the invitation of Kamakul to participate in the Colombian Construction Congress, and I want to say that I am particularly excited. I know Colombia, I have visited it many times, but this is the first time I will be in Barranquilla, and at a very important moment for the country and for all of Latin America. It’s a conference about construction and I’m going to focus on construction in Colombia.

Wake: What will your message be?

air conditioner: I firmly believe and advocate that there is nothing more important than politics, a profession that is so hated and discredited at the moment. But politics is what truly has the power to build or destroy a country. This is why it is so important that politics is for the best people in a society and those with the best ideas for that society. Politics, as I said, is going through a moment of serious crisis all over the world, a very profound process of decline that has caused a crisis of representation in many countries, and this situation is particularly aggravated in Colombia, which in some ways is very similar to what we are witnessing in Spain.

Semana: Why are you talking about degradation?

air conditioner: It is not a process limited to Colombia, but I insist that it is a process similar to what is happening in Spain. This is what I call the Trojan donkeys of democracy. They are figures masquerading as Democrats to enter institutions and begin to erode them from within. That is, they are processes of deterioration of our democracies, from complete democracies to failed democracies. There are a series of elements that I think we need to analyze. This is happening in many of our countries, as well as in Spain, he insisted, which I think may be useful for public thinking.
