Perseverance, NASA’s Mars explorer, found two rocks with shapes that caught the attention of observers of the rover’s movements.
The photo was taken at the end of August, and became the focus of comments due to the shapes of the stones found, as one has the perfect shape of a crab claw, while the other looks like a shark fin.
Other network users pointed out that one of the stones was shaped like a turtle’s head, and speculated that it was unlikely to be fossils of creatures that inhabited Mars millions of years ago.
According to the RT news portal, “Although it is believed that Mars had rivers and ponds billions of years ago, there is no evidence of the presence of crustaceans, let alone sharks.” Clearly, what Perseverance saw is another example of pareidolia, the psychological phenomenon of associating some random stimuli with the form of familiar objects.
As promised, here is the new photo of the week, according to your votes! This rock duo was spotted hanging out together in a windswept area. I spy a… crab claw? Shark end? Comment below with what you see!
