Swedish Prime Minister resigns

Swedish Prime Minister resigns

Sweden’s Prime Minister Stefan Lofven on Wednesday submitted his resignation to Parliament Speaker Andreas Norlin, bringing Finance Minister Magdalena Andersson closer to becoming the first woman to hold the position in the Scandinavian nation’s history.

“I am requesting that I be removed from my position as prime minister,” Lofven said in a brief document handed to Norlin during the day. Parliament had indicated earlier on its website that a meeting was scheduled between the two in which the prime minister was expected to resign.

Lofven, who was satisfied with his government’s achievements during his seven years in office, said he wanted the transition to be “quick”, given that the country will hold elections in 2022, the Swedish reported. The newspaper “Aftonbladet”.

He also stressed that Andersen “has great confidence among the Swedish people”. “They want to see her prime minister,” she said after the SPD elected her leader last week after Lofven resigned as party leader.

The 64-year-old Lofven announced his resignation in August, apparently in an attempt to defuse ongoing political tension and prevent his party from running out of steam ahead of the September 2022 elections. However, the prime minister is still in office while in office.. that set the new scenario for me.

Anderson will become the new prime minister once she has Parliament’s approval for her appointment, although Norleen must first initiate contacts to determine which politician has the best chance of forming the new executive.

The SPD leader now starts as a candidate to win the nomination, so she will later be subject to a confidence proposal in which she needs the support of Los Verdes, part of the coalition, the Left Party and the Center Party, which still needs to be clearly defined after proposing a set of conditions.
