A pair of multicolored boxers peeking out from a robbery suspect’s low-cut pants helped police arrest him more than a year later, federal officials in New York said.
On September 14, 2022, a tobacco shop in Queens was robbed. According to a complaint filed in federal court last week, three masked men exited the Mazda and entered the store.
Two of them fired shots at employees and customers, while a third man emptied the cash register and took merchandise and employees’ cell phones, according to the complaint. The robbers fled in a Mazda.
Surveillance videos released by the media showed the third thief wearing white boxers with a capital letter R and bright yellow 1990s boxers.
An anonymous tipster posted the suspect’s Instagram account with colorful underwear, according to the complaint. The caller also told police the thieves tried to sell their stolen items at another Queens location.
Detectives reviewed video footage from the point of sale and saw the man wearing colorful underwear, which he could easily identify now that he was not wearing a mask, according to the complaint.
According to the complaint, police identified the suspect based on his Instagram account, video of where the items were sold and photos from previous arrests.
The 30-year-old suspect was arrested Wednesday morning at his home in Queens by members of the New York Police Department and the Joint Task Force of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms. He was awaiting arraignment in federal court in Brooklyn, a spokeswoman for the U.S. attorney’s office said.
Two other robbery suspects are still at large, officials said.
