Ohio University will move toward an open science culture.

ANID’s Open Science programme relies on collaboration and the broad and rapid sharing of data and tools, with the aim of fostering peer review and academic debate. This ensures quality and efficiency in the thinking, analysis and innovation of the research the agency promotes.

Hence the importance of the project being awarded to the Vice President for Research and Graduate Studies in collaboration with the Ohio University Libraries Unit in 2024.Moving Towards an Open Science Culture at O’Higgins University“At the InES Open Science Call of ANID, where only 4 national level initiatives received funding, UOH’s proposal was the best ranked.

The project, directed by Paula Earls, Vice President for Research and Graduate Studies, and its Alternate Director Bernardo Rojas, Head of the Ohio University Libraries Unit, aims to establish institutional capacities at the university for the effective management and dissemination of scientific knowledge and the publication of research data, in line with ANID’s open access policies and in accordance with international standards. An amount of US$199,800,000 has been awarded for this purpose.

“This award represents a significant milestone for our university. Not only does it advance our mission to promote open access, which encourages the creation of scientific and research processes to be developed by all citizens, allowing us to connect with the environment and the region, but it also reinforces our commitment to innovation, research integrity and academic excellence,” said Vice-Chancellor Paula Earls.

Likewise, Bernardo Rojas noted that the university will be able to advance “in establishing institutional governance in open science, and shaping and strengthening a technological ecosystem that supports the development of open science through the use of open source platforms such as DSpace, OJS” and Dataverse. This will allow us to share what is being researched at Ohio University with other institutions doing similar work and create an environment of collaboration.

He adds that this will allow Ohio University to be part of the National Infrastructure for Access to Scientific Information (INA), allowing ANID to use repositories to give greater visibility into the work of Ohio University researchers.

Vice Chancellor Earls highlights that the availability of scientific data comes not only from publications, but also from data and findings generated by research conducted at Ohio University (which can be very diverse depending on the discipline), “which will allow for global access to knowledge, allowing us as a university to advance and align ourselves with the open access policies set by ANID and other international organizations.

“It is important to have the commitment and support of the Ohio University community to move forward and achieve the goals set out in the project,” concludes the Ohio University Libraries Unit Chief.
