On December 4, the dictatorship of Daniel Ortega announced the withdrawal of Nicaragua’s ambassador to Argentina, Carlos Medes, in anticipation of the upcoming inauguration of the new president of that South American country, Javier Miley.
Miley is a far-right politician, unreservedly skeptical of authoritarian regimes such as Ortega’s.
“In view of the inauguration and assumption of a new government in the Argentine Republic, the inauguration which will take place on December 10, and in the face of repeated statements and expressions from the new rulers, the Government of National Unity and Reconciliation of Nicaragua proceeded to withdraw its ambassador and fellow writer and communicator Carlos Medenes,” the statement read. The memo adds that this authorization becomes effective immediately, before Miley takes office on December 10.

The officials appointed by Miley confirmed that they excluded Ortega from invitations to the inauguration ceremony, as well as the presidents of Cuba, Venezuela and Iran.
Miley also said he would not strengthen “relations with the communists, nor with Cuba, nor with Venezuela, nor with North Korea, nor with Nicaragua, nor with China.”
Ortega and Murilo congratulated Miley
After confirming Javier Miley’s victory over Argentina in the second round, on Sunday, November 19, Ortega, his wife, and his co-ruler, Rosario Murillo, sent their greetings to the Argentine people and congratulated the new president, via an official message.
“In keeping with the decision of the Argentine people to elect their president, we congratulate President-elect Javier Miley, with our wishes for the well-being of the noble Argentine families. We greet you with affection and fraternal feelings of unity in our great country, in the spirit of our heroes who always give us the strength to fight, to overcome and to defend peace.

Writer Carlos Medence spent nearly two years as Nicaragua’s ambassador to Argentina. He was appointed in March 2022, after the appointment of an ambassador to Spain was withdrawn amid the diplomatic tensions that existed at the time.
