(CNN) — According to the aviation watchdog, more than 2,600 flights were delayed nationwide on Wednesday, the busiest travel day before Thanksgiving. FlightAware.
The storms forced the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to ground some flights — from Florida and elsewhere in the South — to Charlotte Airport, although that restriction has since been lifted. According to FlightAware, one in seven flights to Charlotte today was delayed.
Fewer than 60 flights were canceled nationwide Wednesday, FlightAware reported.
Flights from Newark and LaGuardia were delayed due to heavy traffic and weather problems.
The weather could cause further disruptions at airports in New York, Boston and Philadelphia, the FAA said.
At Washington’s Reagan National Airport, the Transportation Security Administration expects to reach capacity this Wednesday. While wait times in regular screening lanes have reached 25 minutes, the agency’s goal is to keep passengers waiting no longer than 30 minutes.
The FAA expects to fly more than 49,600 flights this Wednesday and the TSA expects to screen more than 2.7 million passengers.
According to FlightAware, these are the five most delayed airports:
Orlando International
New York LaGuardia
Kennedy of New York
Boston Logan
Chicago O’Hare
