(CNN) – Ten Iranian militia members were killed early Sunday after a series of air and drone strikes in Syria’s Deir ez-Zor province, according to a report by media activist group Furat Post.
According to the Furat Post website, the air strikes targeted an air defense system belonging to the Syrian regime forces outside Deir ez-Zor military airport. In addition, three simultaneous air strikes targeted the headquarters of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard in the village of Al-Hari in the Albukamal countryside, near the border with Iraq.
CNN was unable to verify the report, but the group has been trusted in the past.
The fighter jets and drones involved in the attacks remain unidentified. The region previously witnessed American and Israeli air strikes targeting Iranian militias. It is also located on a route frequently used to ship weapons from Iran through Iraq to Syria.
Deir ez-Zor Governorate, located in northeastern Syria, is known for the presence of several Iranian-backed militias, and is also home to several US facilities established during the conflict against the Islamic State (ISIS).
