Major website failures: PlayStation, Delta, McDonald’s

New York (CNN Business) – A major internet outage on Thursday disrupted a wide range of major corporate websites, from FedEx and Delta Airlines to HSBC and McDonald’s.

The outages coincided with reports of system outages from Akamai and Oracle, two major Internet infrastructure service providers.

However, it is unclear if the Akamai and Oracle issues are related to the website outage.

Oracle said Thursday afternoon that its outage was the result of an outage from Akamai’s service.

“We are monitoring a global issue involving DNS partner Edge that affects access to many Internet resources, including Oracle cloud properties,” Oracle said.

Akamai’s DNS Edge service helps direct web browsers to their correct destinations and also provides a security service.

At about 12:50 p.m. ET, Akamai said, “We have implemented a fix for this issue and based on current observations, the service is resuming normal operations. We will continue to monitor to ensure the impact is fully mitigated.”

Affected websites include Fidelity, the Securities and Exchange Commission’s document search site, Airbnb, British Airways, and others. Most sites are back online in less than an hour after the outage started.
