(CNN) – More than 600 people in 37 states in the United States have been infected with the Salmonella outbreak, which is linked to a variety of imported onions, federal health officials said Wednesday.

According to epidemiological interviews conducted by the CDC, many people infected with Salmonella ate onions at the same restaurant.
The number of people infected with the salmonella virus may be higher than reported, and may not be limited to the states where the outbreak was reported, the CDC said.
“Many have recovered without medical attention and have not been tested for Salmonella,” the company said.

Federal health officials are investigating whether other onions and suppliers are associated with the infection.
