(CNN Spanish) –– Cuba’s government confirmed on Tuesday that it had formally requested to join BRICS, the bloc founded by Brazil, Russia, India and China, which South Africa later joined.
Director of Bilateral Affairs at the Cuban Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Carlos M. Pereira, Mentioned in his account Havana sent a letter to Russian President Vladimir Putin to join the group. Russia will assume the presidency of the BRICS in 2024.
Pereira said the BRICS are working to consolidate themselves as “key players in global geopolitics and hope in the region.”
Russian Ambassador to Havana Viktor Coronelli announced the news on Sunday. “Cuba has expressed interest in joining the BRICS group,” he said in statements compiled by the Russian government agency TASS.
Coronelli also said that Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel received an invitation to participate in the expanded meeting parallel to the BRICS summit scheduled to be held in Kazan, Russia, from October 22 to 24.
“In our opinion, they are interested in almost all areas of BRICS activity,” the Russian diplomat noted. “And we will have to wait for the decision on granting union status to see where they will participate more or less actively.”
At the beginning of the year, Iran, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Ethiopia, Iran and Egypt officially joined the BRICS, while other countries in Latin America, such as Bolivia, aspire to join the bloc, which some of its defenders consider to be their own. As an alternative to the group of developed countries known as the G7.
