LOS ANGELES (October 29, 2024) – Building on a long-standing commitment to medical education and graduate studies, Cedars-Sinai has established Cedars-Sinai University of Health Sciences to prepare generations of academic scientists, medical leaders and allied health professionals for the future of health care and the biomedical sciences.
The university will integrate the teaching of clinical, basic and translational research into an academic medical center, offering a broad range of advanced research and professional training programs aimed at creating healthcare leaders and scientists. These programs will also stimulate innovation and train opinion leaders in medical education.
Peter L. said: “The New Health Sciences University builds on the legacy of Cedars-Sinai to promote lifelong learning as a way to improve the health of communities and the system,” said Slavin, MD, president and CEO of Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and Cedars-Sinai Health Foundation. “We are proudly committed to developing high-performing academic researchers and educators in Disease-focused science.”
Students will gain a better understanding of human diseases, how best to treat individuals and populations, improve disease prevention, and raise the overall health of communities.
Shlomo Melmed, MB, ChB“This milestone in the history of Cedars-Sinai will provide students with a unique opportunity to enrich and develop their careers while receiving the highest level of training in medical science and providing medical assistance,” said Executive Vice President for Medicine and Health Sciences and Dean of the School of Medicine. “We are building a university that will offer meaningful career paths aligned with Cedars-Sinai’s mission to raise the health status and well-being of patients and communities.”
Cedars-Sinai is already home to more than 315 graduate students and postdoctoral scientists and 540 residents and fellows. Current students can earn a PhD in Biomedical and Translational Sciences and a Master’s degree in Health Systems and MRI in Medicine.
A New PhD program in artificial intelligence (Artificial intelligence) for health in 2025 will be built on this foundation.
The PhD in Health AI will provide rigorous training in AI algorithms and methods, with an emphasis on analyzing clinical data to improve patient care. The active, hands-on approach to teaching will reinforce AI concepts through clinical rotations and academic collaboration with physicians and medical staff.
Graduates will be positioned to directly improve healthcare and patient outcomes through the rigorous development and deployment of artificial intelligence algorithms and software.
It was also created Chuck Lorre School of Allied Health, With a $30 million grant from the Chuck Lorre Family Foundation, to provide health-related careers to people from historically marginalized groups in Los Angeles and beyond. Students in the first phase of the college will earn a degree in one of the four most in-demand technical specialties that are chronically understaffed in hospitals: Respiratory Therapist, Pharmacy Technician, Clinical Laboratory Technician, and Radiation Therapy Technician.
Regardless of specialty or area of research, students at the university will be matched with clinical partners who will provide mentoring and training throughout their programs.
“We want Cedars-Sinai University of Health Sciences to attract the best and brightest – both in medicine and outside it – individuals who want to devote their careers to making a profound impact on the lives of patients.” Dr. Jeffrey A. golden, Executive Vice Dean for Research and Education and Director of the Burns and Allen Research Institute. “Our goal is for each student to have an invaluable training opportunity and enriching experience for their growth as a health professional.”
