UAP’s contribution to science

Generating knowledge through research is one of the essential functions of higher education institutions, because through it they respond to the requirements of society and contribute to the increase of knowledge for the benefit of people. It is about practicing science conscientiously as suggested by the French thinker Edgar Morin (1921).

Last year, Benemérita Universidad Autónoma de Puebla contributed significantly to the generation of scientific and technological knowledge in Mexico. The top study house ranked second in the country with the highest income from patent applications before the Mexican Institute of Industrial Property (IMPI), with a total of 25 applications in 2020, which was added to the total of 275 applications.

Similarly, BUAP has responded to needs arising from the pandemic, as with the Energy Atlas Group of the College of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, which is collaborating with the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) and which has developed a prototype of a mechanical ventilator for patients hospitalized due to the coronavirus.

Recently, researchers from the Institute of Physics (Ifuap) synthesized bismuth copper sulfide (Cu3BiS3) as a thin film, through a low-cost chemical method. The significance of this development lies in the fact that the composite material can be used as an absorbent material in solar cells, as well as being a resource for power generation and contributing to generating research on emerging, widely available and zero toxicity materials for their application in photovoltaic technologies.

In addition, scholarly publishing has been a key focus of knowledge sharing with the community. One example is the “Tuesdays in Science” programme, which is broadcast on social networks such as Facebook and YouTube, and involves researchers from the faculties of computer science, veterinary medicine, animal science, electronic science, physiology and science. Mathematics and Physics Institute and others.

Other avenues of publication exist in journal form, such as the Spinor Case, which deals with issues relating to the history of science, as well as the application of basic science to everyday life. Its main objective is to open a space for the dissemination of scientific work in the various academic units of the university and to review the current historical scientific panorama.

At the national level, UAP collaborates with research in the country through the National Supercomputer Laboratory in Southeast Mexico, since the main objective is to make the computational resources of this laboratory available to the academic community to generate scientific knowledge. Technological development, innovation and training of high-quality human cadres.

Internationally, the Foundation has been involved in the most representative high-energy effort of recent years: the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) Muon Compact Solenoid. The experiment seeks to collide proton beams at CERN, in Switzerland, where 183 institutions from 38 countries are collaborating, with 3,000 scientists and engineers.

In this way, the UAP is one of the leading institutions of knowledge generation in Mexico, indicating an interest in contributing to the development of a more sustainable society and greater opportunities to improve the quality of life of citizens.
