DENVER – The Padres have officially announced that they have awarded veteran player Jake Arita a minor league contract.
Arrieta, who has 12 years of experience in the majors and a 2015 Old Circuit Cy Young winner, has struggled all season, posting a 6.88 ERA in 20 starts for the Cubs. However, Frailes hopes that changing the environment can help Arrieta regain the level of dominance before.
The San Diego club’s starting group looked a bit weak after failing to add an arm on the trade deadline. But since then, the situation has reached another level of urgency. Righties Yu Darvish (hard back) and Chris Paddack (right-leaning strain) were put on the handicap list, leaving the Padres in a tough spot.
The brothers remain hopeful that Paddack and Darvish can reunite to make an impact on the sprawl. San Diego leads the Reds 2.5 games in the battle for the berth after the final season.
In his 12-season Big Top career, Arrieta has a 3.93 ERA and 115 wins, although he has not posted a better ERA than 4.00 since 2018.
