Speaker of the House of Representatives under the Republican Party of the State of Texas Tate Belen on Tuesday signed arrest warrants against 52 Democrats who again violated the law to prevent the enactment of laws restricting the right to vote.
This is the third time in recent weeks that Democrats have chosen this strategy to block the Republican-controlled legislature.
During the first regular legislative calendar and two other special periods, Governor and Republican Greg Abbott was defeated by Donald Trump, just as other conservative states had encouraged after the last presidential election for approval of these reforms.
The arrest warrants that Belen threatens to be enforced this Wednesday morning are normal, and if arrested, Democrats will not be imprisoned but will be forced to return to the legislature.
To be a quorum, there must be at least 100 legislators By the time the bills were processed and orders placed, only 95-80 Republicans and 15 Democrats had submitted themselves to the Capitol.
About fifty people have fled to Washington since July in Texas and some are still in the federal capital.
Others in Texas, Evelina “Lina” Ortega or Celia Israel, told local media that they had no intention of appearing in the legislature despite arrest warrants being issued against them.
The move by Texas Democrats has had national repercussions and even President Joe Biden praised the “courage” of lawmakers.
In addition to blocking the legislative session in Texas, Democrats called on their colleagues in the US Congress to implement nationwide electoral reform, which has been stalled for months.
In the United States, each state sets its own rules for voting. During the epidemics, many regions eased the need to vote by mail or in advance, prompting a registered vote and promoting conspiracy theories between Trump and his supporters.
Since then, at the state level, Republicans have introduced more than 200 bills in about 40 states to restrict access to the vote.
