“When we talk about cultural exchange, we are talking about unequal power.”

This was one of the conclusions The academics who make up the Department of Regional Studies and Intercultural Dialogue (ETYDI) Follower Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Playa AnchaThis was after the symposium held by the team with Fabien Le BonnickVisiting researcher specializing in cultural exchange.

Fabien Le Bonnick He obtained a doctorate in social anthropology and ethnology from the Graduate School of Social Sciences in Paris. He currently works as an academician and researcher at the Department of Social Sciences at the University of La Frontera, and is also associated with the Research Center in Interethnic and Intercultural Studies at the University of La Frontera.

The guest academic gave an interesting lecture to the members of the department, in which he addressed the concept of cultural exchange through the existing core curricula. In this way, he showed that “intercultural differences are not only about cultural differences, but fundamentally about unequal power.”

The UPLA researcher explained that the intercultural dimension affects multiple spaces in our daily lives. For example, recent migration has transformed the legal system, trade, education, health and housing, and therefore presents challenges in terms of public policy and regional planning.

In this sense, this example of rethinking intercultural interaction represents a major contribution for the members of the department, which in turn has intercultural dialogues and regional studies as its goal and foundation.

After this lecture, the department members continued their day with a workshop that allowed them to reflect on the foundations of this academic space, as well as take a look toward the future.
