Encouraging science

Science is essential to the development of any country, and just as we promote the natural sciences, we must encourage the social sciences with the same vigor. In the social sciences, its core is created by: sociology, anthropology, political science, economics, social psychology and history; Its general goal is to know the different and complex relationships between individuals in society. The great contributions made by Reina Torres de Aroz or Carmen Miro, not only in Panama, but in the world, are an example of the great value that the social sciences provide. The question is, how many of our presidential candidates have incorporated natural and social scientists as professionals in developing their government plans? For decades we have been improvising and leaving science aside, when it is essential to the study of social classes, power, culture, wealth, social subjectivities, historical development, and so on. It is necessary to understand that scientific production of the natural and social sciences, like technological innovations, is not produced or applied in a social vacuum. These productions must be included – in some way – based on knowledge of their social and economic environment, which is expected to have an impact on individual and collective well-being. We must not ignore the relationship between knowledge and scientific production in general, in their necessary relationship with the idea or perception of comprehensive growth and development. You have to care about science. Simply!
