Russian schoolchildren win six gold medals at the 20th International Youth Science Olympiad

Russian schoolchildren won six gold medals at the 20th International Youth Science Olympiad held in Bangkok, Thailand, the Russian government reported on its Telegram channel on Saturday.

311 students from 55 countries participated in the competition, completing physics, chemistry and biology tasks. Russia was represented by six students from schools and high schools in the country, all of whom won gold medals.

In addition, the Russian students received a special award for the trial tour. The team was headed by Valery Slobodyanin, Head of the Pedagogical and Methodological Laboratory for Working with Gifted Children at the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology.

Congratulating the young people on the victory, Russian Education Minister Sergei Kravtsov said: “Our participants demonstrated the highest level of preparation, proving once again that the national education system is rightfully considered one of the best in the world.”

Kravtsov said that the result of the Russian contestants is “a great advantage not only for the schoolchildren themselves, but also for their teachers and mentors.”

In this context, the senior official also expressed his confidence in the successful future of the students. He added: “The path to great science is open to the children, and I am sure that they will find themselves in different directions and work for the benefit of our country.”

According to a report published this week by the Program for International Student Assessment, school performance around the world has recorded an “unprecedented” decline.

Compared to 2018 data, average performance fell by 10 points in reading and by about 15 points in mathematics, especially in European countries such as Germany, Iceland, the Netherlands, Norway and Poland, where there was a decline of 25 points or more in this area.
