Dr. Juan Cansino received the “Municipal Science Prize 2021”

The Academician from the Department of Environment at the University of California College of Science, Juan Cansino, was awarded the “Municipal Science Prize 2021,” in recognition of his career, contribution, and work at Concepcion.

The award is an achievement for all those who have been involved in his career, and highlights the collaborative work carried out throughout his career.

“It is a great honour, as it is a very prestigious award given by the city that has welcomed me, along with UCSC, for nearly 30 years. It is also a source of personal joy and to many people since the award is given in recognition of a profession that a person has undertaken in association with many others. “I thank God for the people who have put me in my path and with whom I have traveled on this journey,” Cancino said.

The academic from the University of California, San Francisco School of Science conducted his undergraduate studies at Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, and received his Bachelor’s degree in Biological Sciences. Subsequently, he received his Ph.D. at the University of North Wales (currently Bangor University) where in 1983 he obtained a Ph.D. in marine zoology.

His relationship with UCSC began 30 years ago, when the first UCSC President, Eliseo Escudero Herrero, invited him to collaborate at the start of this project and join the position of Dean of the UCSC College of Science, which was founded in February 1992.

“I worked at the Faculty of Biological Sciences at Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, and I asked my wife and colleague from the college for advice to make the decision, and the latter told me not to doubt it because Chile must be built from everywhere,” Cancun recalls the beginning of his career at UCSC.

Cancino was appointed President of UCSC for two consecutive terms, between 2006 and 2015. Currently, he is a full-time professor in the University of California College of Science. He teaches natural history courses in Chile (in collaboration with Professors Guillermo Herrera and Leticia Astudillo), where he meets students of different professions.

Cansino has worked on more than 20 national and international research projects, including those of Fondecyt, FIP, INACH, and NERC. According to Researchgate, she has 80 publications, over 10,000 reads and over 1,600 citations. Google Scholar has over 2,200 quotes. He is a founding member of the Chilean Society of Marine Science and the Chilean Environmental Society.

Cansino made a call to empower the talents of new generations and work with passion and integrity. “In the path of training as a scientist, one meets teachers. Then, without knowing, one becomes a teacher to others, it is like a series of blessings. I am pleased to see that some of my students have followed the same path.
